Grandma's Sweet Pickles
This is a great sweet pickle recipe that takes around seven days to make.
Equipment
- 1 Large enamel pan or food-safe bucket
- 1 Collander
- 1 Large Pot (capable of holding one gallon of liquid at a boil.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Salt
- 2 tbsp Powdered Alum
- 3 Gallons Water
- 1 Gallon Vinegar I prefer white, can use Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 small box Pickling Spice Use 1/2 cup of purchased in bulk
Instructions
Day One
- Wash the cucumbers and poke holes in the skin, a couple times per little cuckes.
- Put the cukes in the food-safe bucket or a large enamel pot
- Combine salt with a gallon of water and bring it to a boil
- Cover the cucumbers with it and let them sit for 24 hours (weigh the cukes down if they start to float.
Day Two
- Drain salt water from the pot of cucumbers.
- Mix the powdered alum and one gallon of water in a large pot on the stovetop. Bring to a boil, then pour over the cucumbers and allow to stand for 24 hours.
Day Three
- Drain the alum water from the pot of cucumbers. Rinse and drain again.
- Bring a gallon of plain water to a boil, then pour the boiling water over the cucumbers in the enamel pot. Soak for 24 hours.
Day 4
- Drain cucumbers
- Bring vinegar and pickling spices to a boil on the stovetop
- Pour over the cucumbers and let soak for 5 days
Day 6-8
- Continue to soak cucumbers in vinegar and spice mixture
- Stir Occasionally
Day 9
- Drain cucumbers in a colander.
- Place cucumbers in quart jars, layering cucumbers and sugar
- They will start to make sugar syrup naturally
- Fill jars and let sit for 24 hours. If there is not enough syrup to cover the cucumbers, add sugar to the jars and let sit for another 24 hours.
- Let sit for a few weeks before opening and eating. (You can water bath can these if you want, but you don’t need to.

That's it. This is pretty easy but time-consuming, although that is mostly a lot of soaking time.
